Archaeology and Museums department Gilgit-Baltistan is working for conservation and preservation of historical monuments, rock carvings antiquities archaeological sites by aping state of the art methodologies and techniques preferably with the help external experts. After 18th Amendment, the Ministry of culture has been dissolved which has created a dire need to take necessary arrangement to carry the ongoing preservation process.
The rich culture and historical sites of Gilgit-Baltistan have unique identity in the world, but unfortunately due to lack of references on national level the department of archaeology and museum failed to achieve maximum in preservation and promotion work.
Gilgit-Baltistan is famous for rock art sites and richer in rock carving of pre-historic. Buddhist and past Buddhist period. There is no written record of the early history of Gilgit-Baltistan, but there exist archaeological remain that offer guidance to history of the region. A.H franck in his “History of western Tibet” calls people of the area people of rock-art. Over the centuries various structure have be designed and developed to respect the nature in order to create harmony between the build structures and landscapes.
Traces of the culture impact of Tibetan Buddhism and art from the 8th century to 12th century are found throughout the region attaching there to a number of values making them tangible and intangible cultural assets.
