I hope this finds you well.

2.               You must be aware of the fact that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is transforming the remote but spectacular Gilgit-Baltistan. Formerly known as the Northern Area and once part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, the region at the confluence of world’s greatest mountain ranges – the Karakoram, the Himalaya, the Hindukush, and the Pamir – is witnessing a brain gain, as people return to invest in the region. Rich in history, culture, and natural beauty the area which also remained a center of rivalries between Russian, British and Chinese empires has been a cynosure of trekkers and adventure tourists over centuries.

 3.                     Blessed with high peaks like K2, Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is a spectacularly beautiful area of Pakistan, but is economically poor and environmentally fragile. The opening of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in 1978 dramatically improved access to the area which previously could only be reached by air or seasonal jeep roads. One of the results of the opening of the KKH has been rapidly growing tourism (reportedly 2 million visitors last year). GB government is making huge efforts for development of infrastructure in the area; GB has a great potential in tourism, power, agriculture, mining and wood industries.

 4.                     Industries in GB are in dire need of foreign investments. It is, therefore, requested to the World Bank to come forward to play its due role in development of GB.

 5.                     Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,
